When ever you use an icon its used for the representation of concept, now you can't be detail if you go details and getting more realistic and pacing a real picture you might confuse the user on the page. though he might figure out what it ment for but still he develops a sense of confusion.
the cartoon, icons must be used to represent an concept. I will not call it an idea. it will add more confusion.we can use 1st pic for home but it will be too detailed and specific. we go for generic.
but on going generic if we don't provide substantial distinction it will mix with other concepts.
like image below extreme rt. seems like big up arrow symbol.
